Sigma Contemporary 16mm 1.4 DC DN Review [ Sony E Mount ] - Honest Detailed Review

The Canon EF-M 22mm f / 2 is a wonderful lens, but every now and then you want more focal length. To meet this need, there is the Canon EF-M 11-22mm . This is also a great lens and I really enjoy using it. Nevertheless, I bought the Sigma Contemporary 16 mm f / 1.4 * and would like to introduce it here.

Why the Sigma Contemporary 16mm 1.4 DC DN?

Admittedly, this lens is not the smallest and also weighs 405g. One would like to question why one then has such a small camera when the lens is so big and heavy again. But these are my reasons:

Special but versatile focal length

The focal length of 16mm (corresponds approximately to the angle of view of a 26mm lens due to the Canon crop factor of 1.6) falls into the wide-angle category. This angle of view is very suitable for a wide variety of applications. Whenever context should be shown in the photo, you can't go wrong with this choice.

The Sigma Contemporary 16mm is not only suitable for use in your own four walls, but also in nature. I especially like to take it with me when hiking (except on really long tours, when you have to pay attention to weight, then the Fujifilm XF10 is used).

High quality

The great sharpness of this lens always stands out positively. It's just fun when you get this image quality when taking photos:

In addition, the workmanship is high quality, the feel is good. Together with the Canon EOS M50, the Sigma Contemporary 16mm 1.4 sits comfortably in the hand.

Beautiful sun stars / aperture stars

I particularly like aperture stars, especially when taking photos of nature ( how do you get aperture stars? ). That is why I also pay attention to what the new (wide-angle) lenses look like, because not every lens can depict beautiful aperture stars. In my opinion, the Sigma Contemporary 16mm delivers:

Of course, this criterion is not important for everyone. But if you do, then this lens is definitely an option!

Suitable for astrophotography

With an aperture of 1.4, the Sigma 16mm is also suitable for astrophotography . However, I cannot yet show a practical example because I have not yet used it for this purpose.

Conclusion

The Sigma Contemporary 16mm 1.4 DC DN is a really well done lens for APS-C. It is not only available for the EF-M-Mount, but also for the E-Mount and for MFT. The quality is very high and it can be used in many ways. Even though I'm much more flexible with a Canon EF-M 11-22, I prefer the 16mm, the image quality is higher and it makes the aperture stars nicer.
